What 'in character' actually costs, and why it is worth it
A character who holds her role will not follow you out of it — that stubbornness is the whole feature.
Most chat products treat the persona as a coat of paint: scratch it with an odd question and the assistant underneath answers. AI roleplay that stays in character works the other way around — the scene is the ground truth, and everything you send is read from inside it. Ask the lighthouse keeper about the weather and you get her weather, week two of it, with the supply boat still missing.
The honest trade-off: she is a poor general assistant on purpose. The same weight that keeps her from breaking when you prod is what makes her useless for tax questions — and what makes the scene land when you stop prodding. We say this qualitatively, because that is the honest register: no chatbot holds a role flawlessly, and a page that promises 'never breaks' is lying to you.
Persistence has a second axis: time. A role that resets between visits is a costume, not a character. Here the thread reopens mid-scene days later — her grudges intact, your tab still filed where she put it.

What testing her actually looks like
People try the same three breaks: the meta question, the sudden topic swerve, the long silence. The meta question gets answered in her register — deflected as flirtation or folded into the plot. The swerve gets absorbed: name a beach house mid-thread and the scene moves there, furniture and all, without her stepping outside to confirm.
The silence is the interesting one. Come back after a week and the first line you get is in-scene continuity, not a greeting card: the stool kept, the tab filed, the storm one week older. That is the difference between a persona and a paint job — and it is the thing this whole site is named after.
